Hello there,

Firstly my specs:

Platform Windows XP Professional with latest updates
Direct X 9.0c
P4 3.0E Prescott with a Thermaltake Silent Tower CL-P0025
MSI Mainboard (with integrated sound - disabled)
BFG 6600GT Video Card
Soundblaster 5.1 Live!
1.25 Gigs of DDR400
Optical & 80 Gig Maxtor
HighSpeed Internet

So thats my setup in brief. Now onto the issue.

- I used to use fraps alot with no issues while using the latest version of ventrilo
- I recently switched my mainboard.
- My Sound in the control panel points to the SB Live card
- Everything works fine if I run ventrilo alone
- As Soon as I decide to load up fraps my microphone stops working, but I can still hear my team on ventrilo
- In fraps I do not record sound, however sometimes I call targets

I would like to be able to fraps some battles so I can look back on it, any idea what to do. It is apparent that there is a conflict between the two programs. But the issue may be an IRQ conflict or something. Any advice is welcomed, if you need more information please let me know

PS - I may as well ask this too while Im here ... since my new mainboard, when I load Internet Explorer ... it delays for 3 seconds checking proxy settings before loading, even though I have it set to automatically detect settings. Even when I connect straight to the internet bypassing my router same issue. Is this an ISP issue reading my MAC address? or a software settings issue on my end?

In reguards to sound, I would make sure you are using the most current sound card drivers and mother board drivers (from intel's web site). This may or may not help. They both should be MS WHQL support and not create any new problems.

Do you know the mother board chipset (intel, via, nforce?)

If they doesn't help, there is something more advanced you could try but will hold off on that at the moment.

yeah the mainboard chipset is Intel ... ICH5

The sound card is old ... it may be the actual problem ... so what I am planning on doing will be to remove it see if I can run my sound from the mainboard sound only ... then test it, if that doesnt work out then I will grab any updates to the mainboard ... test again then give results tomorrow night after I test.

so I reformatted, (reloaded all gw content), got the latest drivers and used the onboard sound instead of my pci card, now I can fraps and it does not affect my microphone, so I can still call. But I cannot record fraps with sound ... I dont care too much about that ... so this fix will work. Thanks again.

I think the way Fraps has to "grab the audio/video" from the system, it was disabling the mic. It sounds like after the change it can't grab it and that is why it's not able to record it. This is a guess on my part.

You may want to shoot a support e-mail to Fraps directly. I could not find anything in there faq.

When setting up fraps, if you tell it to record sound, It will switch your sound cards 'RECORDING' control over to Wave or What You Hear - thus disabling your mic for Ventrilo/TeamSpeak etc -- theres 2 things you can do...

1) not record sound on fraps, and leave it set to your mic..
2) have fraps switch this, and enable the mic at the same time..

The drawback(s) to number 2 are... 1) you will hear your own voice in your speakers/headset (can also cause feedback if using speakers) and 2) fraps will also record your voice, as-well as the game sound

Any ways, Basically, heres how to check things.. the little volume control icon in the bottom of your screen... Double click it, go to "Options > Properties" and in that list at the bottom put a TICK in 'Microphone' and click OK... You will see its muted, un-muting this will enable the microphone, but be at the stage indicated above...

If you go back to Options > Properties and at the top theres 2 options "playback" and "Recording" - select recording, and click OK, -- Again, you will see microphone (usually selected) and you will see Wave, and Maybe What You hear or Stereo Mix (or similar, these can vary from make to make) -- When fraps records the sound, you will see it switch over from mic....

Have a play with these various settings, and you will see what i mean above

the other alternative, is to have a second sound card, one for mic ONLY.. this is a little more complicated to set up, but DOES work.. If you want to go for this option, just reply to this thread saying thats what you have done, and ill help you set it up properly

In my system sound options I always tend to keep my mic muted because its annoying to hear myself echo. I will play around with the options properties to see if various combinations work better than my setup atm, but I'm pretty satisfied with not recording sound. It's more to look back at my Guild battles, and see if I can catch things my team needs to work on / recognize. Of course this would be easier if we were top 100, but until then I just need to record my battles ... but still be able to call the ball.

Thanks for all your responses, I will also be contacting fraps to send them an email so perhaps there future builds can work more seemlessly with voice communication programs.

I seriously doubt fraps could do anything, since its a soundcard limitation.. Unless theres some way they can capture the sound direct from DirectSound - though thats doubtful..
